| This and other private drives in the district are made pleasing in colour by the red brick dust that is used as a surface to them. We pass through a dense grove of trees, valuable from the shelter that they provide in an exposed position, before coming to the wide and spacious forecourt. This walled-in formal approach was part of the design of Mr. Francis Inigo Thomas when he added to the original old house, converting it into a handsome home for the late Sir Lindsay Lindsay-Hogg. Mr. Thomas was, in early days, a pupil of the great architect Mr. G. F. Bodley, and so his training under this distinguished man, together with his own talent, fitted him well for the task. The lay-out of Rotherfield Hall, both in regard to the interior and exterior, is impressive and dignified. The whole has been so skilfully done that as you approach the front door it is hardly possible to believe that the entire building is not ancient. extract from Viscountess Wolseley's Rotherfield Hall |
