1879RecollectionsAlbert Henry Hills, landed proprietorHighhurstAshdown Forest - notebook 3

During The Ashdown Forest Dispute 1876-1882 commoners and land owners were interviewed by the solicitor William Raper. Their comments were recorded in a series of notebooks:

Hills, Albert Henry. Highhurst, Buxted. Gent. Owner of four properties in Buxted viz. Perryman's Grove, The Nest, Morphews and Parkhurst. I claim rights only in respect of Perryman's Grove. The others are held of the Manor of Framfield. Perryman's Grove comprises about 41 acres. I purchased it from my uncle Borer in 1861 or 1862. He purchased it off Richard Cloke some 6 or 7 years before and I became acquainted with the property soon after. I was living at the time at Parkhurst in the same parish. When my uncle purchased Perryman's Grove there was a ruinous old house upon it which he pulled down immediately and he built a new cottage in place of it. I superintended the building of it. After I purchased it I used it until 9 or 10 years ago and then I went away to the Brazils for 7 or 8 years and let it to a Mr. Henry Whitewood [who] continues to occupy it.

1890HistoryHigh HurstwoodFirmin's Guide

High Hurstwood is a charming little village, about three miles from Crowborough, situated between it and Buxted.

It was formerly part of the parish of Buxted, but it is now a separate ecclesiastical parish. The Church (Holy Trinity) was built about 1872. The west window was painted by the late Lady Harcourt, who resided at Buxted Place, in Buxted Park. The church is placed on the slope of a hill, and looks very picturesque from the opposite slope.

The interior, also, is attractively pleasing, and this little place of worship may be called the bijou of a village church.

There are many delightful little nooks in the village, and those who seek a quiet retreat combined with the charms of beautiful scenery will find them in this sweet spot.

It is, however, situated on much lower ground than Crowborough, and has not the bracing atmosphere for which Crowborough is so renowned, but Crowborough lacks many of the charms which this village possesses.

Nightingales frequent the vale in numbers, and the summer nights resound with their liquid notes, while all else is still and solemn. A moonlight walk here is beyond description.
