| Births Dec 1870 Grover William Daniel Sevenoaks 2a 504 listed as William D Grener in 1871 census Was in Greatness College with Lord Sackville, where they became friends. The used to play billiards at Knole House and gamble for pieces of furniture that William fancied. This grand furniture populated their house in Romford when they were at their poorest, but it was left there when the family moved to London during WWII and was repossessed went rent on the house was not kept up. Nana says he used to buy the meat himself at Smithfield. C. 1920 he borrowed money from William Holmyard, a furniture dealer and bookmaker, to set up a betting business in Twickenham. After that, he seems to have continually lost money betting, particularly on football (soccer). It is not clear if the bets were through the business or with Holmyard. On Jan. 18, 1925 he mortaged his house on Hampton Rd, Twickenham to Holmyard for £450. He also had to sell his house in Brighton for £580 to pay off gambling debts. In April 1926, he lost a court case against Holmyard in which he tried to avoid turning over the mortgaged house by arguing that the mortgage was for the purpose of securing betting debts owed to Holmyard and therefore was for an illegal consideration and should be void. Holmyard stated that the mortaged was to secure the money he loaned Grover to set up a betting business and not to pay off betting debts to himself, a story which was corroborated by his solicitor and housekeeper. Holmyard had more evidence to support his case, so Grover had to give up the house. It is not clear who was actually in the wrong. Nana says that she remembers him always gambling. He was disowned by his family and considered the black sheep, but he paid back every penny he owed. Nana says the family was Baptist, and they attended St. Nicholas Church in Sevenoaks, where he was a choir boy. However St. Nicholas is the Church of England parish church for Sevenoaks (not Baptist). |
