The oldest portion of the present house [Buckhurst] - the house-keeper's room, the long passge, and old kitchen, etc - dates back to 1743, which is the date on the stack pipe near one of the new towers.

In a drawing dated 1785, it is called Stoneland House, and the entrance is something like the present; but the remainder of the building, although gabled, is very different.
