1879RecollectionsJames Turner, farmerLampool FarmAshdown Forest dispute

During The Ashdown Forest Dispute 1876-1882 commoners and land owners were interviewed by the solicitor William Raper. Their comments were recorded in a series of notebooks:

Turner, James. 65. Tenant of Lampool Farm (103 acres), Maresfield, belonging to Lady Shelley, for 14 years past. Succeeded Richard Ray, now at Marshalls. I was born at Nutley. When I was a lad between 11 and 12 I went to work for Mr. Le Blanc at Pippingford for over 5 years. When I was 17 I went to live with my uncle John Wood at Charlwood Farm, Fletching, (Shelley's) as carter for 5 years. Then I came back to my Father for about 2 years, and sometimes cut litter on the Forest. I then went to manage a little farm belonging to the Widow Lewry who also used some land called Gotlands belonging to the Shelleys for 17 years. then I took Shovelstrode Farm at East Grinstead for 7 years. then I came to Lampool.

When I worked at Pippingford I used to go daily backwards and forwards to Mill Brook where my Father lived. I used to see people taking litter including my uncle James Wood who had Marlpits Farm adjoining the Forest near Nutley, my Father for his farm on the Forest adjoining Mill Brook, William Osborne for Hill House Farm near the Nutley Inn Farm, William Barnes who had the Nutley Inn and Farm, Humphrey who had Clapwater Farm, Verrall who had Blackwenn (he had a deal of litter) and Wheeler of Masketts.
