c 1875RecollectionsAlfred ChapmanMount PleasantAshdown Forest dispute

During The Ashdown Forest Dispute 1876-1882 commoners and land owners were interviewed by the solicitor William Raper. Their comments were recorded in a series of notebooks:

Chapman, Alfred. Aged 63. Farmer and dealer. Farms Mount Pleasant in Maresfield. Bought it about 19 years [ago]. It is copyhold of Duddleswell Manor. Never farmed before he bought it. When he was 10 years old worked as carter boy for Mr. Jarvis of Crowpits Farm, Buxted, (and] stayed with him 5 years and then worked for Mr. Norman, Pounsley Mill Farm, Buxted, for 13 years and then took to dealing on his own account............. Since he purchased Mount Pleasant he built a house about 14 years ago and about a year afterwards built a cottage and a lean-to.
