Heasman, Samuel. 68. Living at Pages Gill and on the Forest near Forest Row. Born 22 Feb 1811 in Pages Gill and baptised at East Grinstead. Lived in this part of the Forest all his life has never been away [more than] a month at a time. Father used to go out litter cutting on the Forest and kept 2 cows and 3 or 4 young stock which ran on the Forest. Used to go out on the Forest with Father as a boy at 9 or 10 and helped him rake up the litter he had cut and took to cutting litter myself as soon as I was big enough and have cut every year since for anyone who wanted it. I have never sent any out of East Grinstead and Hartfield. There used to be certain people who had the right to turn out but everybody now takes what he wants.

When I was a boy I remember my Father and brothers cut for Jeffery at Pixton Hill. I knew the team that fetched my brother Edward (now dead) worked for Mr. Jeffery [and] Edward Heaver of Tablehurst and Pigstyes.

I have cut for the last 55 years for various persons amongst them Pixton Hill for Edgar and Colonel Moor till the last 2 years, Tablehurst and Pigstyes for Edward Heaver and Robert Turner till the last few years. Others have cut for him since down to the present time.

[I also cut for] Ashdown House for Master Jenner about 40 years ago when he was bailiff and 8 loads for Mr. Larkin when Brooker was his bailiff and I often saw his teams carrying.

Lines Farm and Little Parrock for Robert Coward about 20 years ago. I have often seen his teams carrying. Upper Parrock Farm the late Stephen Langridge and I have often seen his sons teams carrying it in.

The farm adjoining the Paygate at Forest Row for Bond (I believe) and for Edward Heaver. I have seen his successor Huggett's son cutting for old William Histed and since for his nephew Henry Histed for their land at Forest Row and for Burnt House.

For Burnt House, Forest Row, for Thomas Betchley (dead) and Henry Histed, and I have frequently seen his successor Glazier's cart out carrying it in. David Kemp cut for him for South Park for Betchley about 40 years ago.

For Mr. Murchison's land a few loads one about 40 years ago.

For a little farm now belonging to Mr. Freshfield adjoining his Ivy Cottage and which formerly belonged to Dr Collins.

[For] Thomas Waghorn, about 40 years ago, for several years.
