Hollamby, Edward. 66. Born in Hartfield. working now for Mr. Hale. When a small child in petticoats remembers living at Upper Parrock. My father worked for Luke Godly who used the farm. Lived there till 12 or 13 and used to go with Father to Forest for turf. Then went to Hartfield workhouse for a short time, times being very bad. Then we went on the Forest to live and I went to work for Mr. Hartipole at the Dorset Arms, Hartfield (Lord De La Warr's property), for about 2 years. He used a good deal of litter from the Forest. I went with the team to fetch it. We cut within the reservation by the 500. He turned out on the Forest. I then went for a year to Cansiron, then to Cowden for 1 year, then to Scotchford Farm for 2 years under Mr. Luke Godly who had removed there.

He turned out on the Forest from Scotchford and used to have a good deal of litter. I used to fetch it. Then to Buckhurst under Mr. Doggett for a year. Do not recollect whether he turned out or had anything from the Forest. Then to Old Lodge for 1 1/2 years [and] then to Ridge Hill, East Grinstead, under Mr. Gardner 1 year. Then to Bashford the carrier at Quabrook for 1 1/2 year and went with his team to and from London. He had about 4 acres of his own there and hired some land from Mr. Fuller close by. He had litter on both lots. I remember him having a disturbance with some people who cut litter too close to his fence. He carried it in and then they cut some close to his house. Then I went to Holly Hill under Mr. Jackson for 1 1/2 years I was then about 25. I was carter. At that time he had litter, turf and peat off the Forest. He got it in with the ox team. He turned his cattle out. I carried in mould off the Forest but was ordered by old Robert Edwards the Reeve not to take any more. I reported to Mr. Jackson and continued carrying it in notwithstanding. Nothing more was said about it. After that worked about the neighbourhood. I used to see Mr. Hale's teams and teams of all the Forest close round the Forest carrying litter.
