Job Tester

Tester, Job. Nearly 50. At Browns Brook. Worked for Mr. Robert Wilson at Strood and Barns Gate for 16 years and cut litter for him every year except 1878-9 and has cut this autumn. Generally cuts over 20 load a winter. Before that used to cut for John Page (dead) and his son Thomas Page (dead) at Cophall Farm. After Thomas Page, Mr. Tutor hired the farm several years and used to have litter. I have cut some for him. Mr. Pilbeam succeeded him two years ago [and] he had litter last year.

When I first remember Strood and Puxty Farms they belonged to Squire Benham. He farmed both and I cut litter for him as long as I can remember. Afterwards he let Stroods to Alfred T. Dadswell. I do not think he had litter but I continued to cut for Puxty. Mr. Patmore afterwards bought Puxty and used to send out and cut litter every year. Tim Tester, now at Fletching, used to cut it.

When I was a little boy I worked at Barns Gate Farm for Edward Dadswell and afterwards for his son Edward Dadswell. They used to have litter and the successive occupiers have had litter. Everybody had litter all round the neighbourhood of the Forest.

I cut a few loads of litter for old John Minns when he fanned Old Lands.

I know Barnsden Farm by Browns Brook belonging to Mr. Streatfield. I remember the tenants Thomas Paris, John Moon, James Moon, Henry Can junior and now Hazelden. They have all had litter. I have cut for most of them and have seen them taking it in.

Lord De La Warr proceeded against me for litter cutting, but nothing ever came of it.

I live on a plot of ground I took in 25 years ago. I have never been to court to take a grant but I pay is 6d a year to Lord De La Warr. Has receipts for same signed by George Edwards as Reeve of Duddleswell Manor.
