Alfred Dadswell

Dadswell, Alfred. 34. Working for Mr. Nesbitt. Son of Alfred T. Dadswell (dead). Born at Shadwell Farm, Buxted. My father (dead) had Strood Farm now belonging to Mr. Robert Wilson for 8 years. Then we moved to Barnsgate Farm (belongs to Mr. Robert Wilson) for 2 years and left it about 20 years ago. I well remember that when we were at Strood and at Barnsgate Farms my Father used to have litter and turf for fuel from the Forest. Alfred Tester (now living at Ticehurst) and Luke (Barnsden) used to cut for us. I went out at times and helped get it in. Mr. John Baker took Barnsgate Farm after my Father for 2 or 3 [years] and we worked for him and cut litter for him on the Forest. He was succeeded by Mr. Robert Wilson and I continued to work for him for 4 years during each of which years I cut litter for him on the Forest for Stroods and Barnsgate. Since I have left his service I have seen his teams taking litter off the Forest every year except 1878-9. I have seen his teams loading it this autumn.

We left Stroods when Mr. Wilson took [it] and during the time my Father and Mr. J. B. Baker had Barnsgate Farm. I know that Mr. Wilson had litter at Stroods. His teams used to carry it in from the Forest by the road which runs through Barnsgate Farm.

I know Claygates Farm (Mr. Wantner's property) as far back as I can remember anything. Mr. Gilbert the then tenant used to have litter and turf off the Forest. They used generally to fetch it by the road running through Barnsgate Farm. His successor Mr. Clifton used also to have both turf and litter.

I know Puxty Farm now called Heron's Gill. When I first remember it, it was owned and occupied by Mr. Benham. He used to have litter and a great deal of mould off the Forest. He was succeeded by Mr. Pays, Putland and Patmore all of whom had litter.
