Luke Tester

Tester, Luke. 59. Living at Crest Cottage near Duddleswell. Memory rather at fault. Born at Duddleswell and lived close to the spot all my life. My Father lived at Duddleswell all his life and used to cut litter and turf for anyone who wanted it and cut a great deal of timber on the Forest for the old Lord De La Warr. As soon as I was big enough I used to go out and help him and I took to cutting as soon as I could swing a scythe.

I know Whitehouse Farm at Duddleswell. When I was a boy John Wheatley (gone abroad) used it. He had litter and turf; I used to see his cart carrying them in and he used to turn out his stock. Daw (dead) came after and did the same. Afterwards came Ridley (dead) who had a withered hand. He had litter and turf and a great deal of mould and turned out. After him came Thomas Osborn [who] for some years had litter and turf and turned out. Then came Penfold and did the same; he had large quantities of litter. Then the Shelleys farmed it themselves till this last Michaelmas. I do not think they had any litter or turf or turned out. They kept no stock there in the summer. Thomas Osborn has now taken it and has carried in some litter already.

I know the property belonging to Mr. Barchard now called Duddleswell House. When I was a boy Mrs Lee used it. I do not know what she did. Hardisty came after, James Martin was his bailiff. Then came a Mr. [?- green] for 2 or 3 years. John Combridge came next from Lampool before I was married. (I was married in 1840.) He had litter and turf and turned out. Later Captain Barwell purchased [it] and when Mr. Barchard married his daughter they rebuilt the house and have lived there ever since. Mr. Barchard has had brakes and litter. I have cut them at times for him. He has not turned out.

I know Barnsden. When I was a boy Thomas Star used the farm. He had a good deal of litter and turf and turned out. After him came Thomas Paris who did the same. Then came John Moon and then James Moon; they did the same. Then Henry Card, he did the same. Then Hazleden who is there now. He has done the same.
