Stevenson, John. 62. Born in Fletching Street, 16 December 1816. Father, Henry Stevenson, was a bargeman. I helped him. In 1838 he took the Spring Farm and Bottings Farm in Fletching, 40 acres (Sir S. M. Wilson) and about 10 years after he took the Pasture Fields, 20 acres in Fletching (Sir S. M. Wilson). He farmed the whole till his death at Christmas 1878 and I succeeded him. My Father had litter from Ashdown Forest every year till the last 4 or 5 years, since which we have not had any because we have had enough at home. My Father frequently had turf for fuel in the house at Spring Farm. There is no house on Bottings or the Pasture Fields. Can inform William Stevenson as to uses at Knabbs and the Vicar's Glebe and Grove Farms. The year after my Father took the Spring Farm, Thomas Osborn took Moyses Farm and a few years after he also took Lawrence's Farm and used both till his death about 8 years ago. He was succeeded by John Botting who held both Farms 2 or 3 years and was succeeded by James Mepham. I know that Osborn used to have litter and turf every year from the Forest down to his death. Our farms adjoined and the yard of Lawrence's Farm was opposite our door so that we saw all that went on there. I was on intimate terms with Osborn and was frequently at Moyses so that I had every opportunity of knowing what he did. |
