Diplock, James. Farmer, aged 49. Owns about 40 acres called Lower Spring Gardens. Bought it 17 years ago. Part is copyhold (3 tenements) of Duddleswell Manor paying Quit rent of 10s., 2s. 6d., and Is. His Grandfather owned land close by called Mailing Down, about 50 acres, and his Father after him. Had stone off the Forest for the foundation of the house he built 10 years ago and never was asked to pay for it. Don't know Lord De La Warr's people knew that he had it. Don't know whether other people have paid or not.

Never had any marl.

His Grandfather or Father and he have always had turf and litter off the Forest, but never paid for it or gave any acknowledgement.

Malling Down he always understood had considerable rights on the Forest. Never had any wood off the Forest. Always have got gravel when we wanted it without telling anyone about [it].
