Ashdown Forest dispute

During The Ashdown Forest Dispute 1876-1882 commoners and land owners were interviewed by the solicitor William Raper. Their comments were recorded in a series of notebooks:

Heasman, George. Friars Gate, Withyham. 60. Born at Friars Gate. Lived there all his life and had cut litter on the Forest for most of the farmers in Withyham parish whether tenants of my Lord or not. Have cut a little turf for my own use only. Never cut any peat.
