Spencer Baker, son of Spencer Baker, farmer and Susan Baker [Lindfield]
Printer friendly version

Spencer Baker was unmarried, a building contractor, who emigrated to Saskatoon, Canada on the RMS Empress of Britain, sailing from Liverpool to St John's, New Brunswick in March 1909. At the outbreak of war in August 1914, Spencer enlisted in the Canadian army as a private in the Saskatoon Light Horse. In September 1917, he applied to join the Canadian Expeditionary Force (the C.E.F.) to the Western Front. He was then 37, but to ensure acceptance for the C.E.F., he falsified his birth year on his attestation paper to appear to be only 34. Spencer was appointed as an officer with the rank of Lieutenant, in Company C, 4th Division of the 46th Battalion, Canadian Infantry. He arrived in the Ypres Salient, Belgium in October 1917 in preparation for the second battle of Passchendeale. The battle began on 26th October with an advance from the British lines towards the high ground near the village of Passchendaele. Spencer's C Company successfully cleared enemy troops from a railway cutting and small copse before advancing towards the ridge ahead of them. In that advance across open ground full of mud and shell holes, Spencer Baker was killed. Of the 500 officers and men in the 4th Division, over 400 were killed or wounded. Lieut. Spencer Baker is buried in the Passchendeale New British Cemetery and he is commemorated on the War Memorial at Danehill. It is not apparent from the war memorial that he was in the Canadian army, not the British army, or his military rank. The Danehill war memorial does not distinguish between men of that village and those from its sister village of Chelwood Gate, which is in the same parish and it was Chelwood Gate that was home to Spencer Baker.
