James Groombridge 2nd Battalion Royal Sussex Regiment, son of Mr. William Groombridge (bailiff of Mr. G. Burt, J.P. of Castle Hill, Rotherfield and residing at Castle Hill Farm) was wounded during the British advance on 25th (1918?) at the age of 24. He had been at the front about 4 months and is now in hospital at Cowes. Isle of Wight where he is progressing satisfactorily. There follows an extract from one of his letters:
"I was wounded on Saturday 25th September about 9 a.m. when we were just outside a German trench. They didn't half gas us, too, but I am glad to say I never felt any of the effects, because I was wearing my helmet all the time. I saw several gassed, and it was awful to see them trying to get their breath. I don´t know if my hand (right) will get right again, but I hope so. The bullet entered the back of my thumb and came out in the palm of my hand. I think I was lucky to get home, as I have had my hat, tunic and trousers holed by bullets. There are only two Sussex chaps here, i.e. a fellow from Uckfield and myself. We were chums in France and it is nice to have someone from near home to whom to talk. We are having nice weather."
