Bartley Mill      Frant
Historical records

c 1350Historythe Abbot [of Bayham, Solomon de Wengham] had been having trouble with some of his tenants at 'Bertle', namely Henry de Wyse, Doucea le Swan, Richard Browning and Matthew Scott. The Abbot had given them notice to quit. … The place that this happened is now known as Bartley, and in the Frant Manor Rolls of the sixteenth century, there are references to land nearby Bartley Mill called Wises which doubtless took its name from Henry de Wyse of Abbot Solomon's day.Bartley MillEeles' Frant

1600 to 1806HistoryBartley farm and Verridge were owned by the Abbey of Bayham but appear to have been separated at the Dissolution. They were in the same hands when they were owned by the Barhams of Great Shoesmiths. When the Egles, the heirs of this branch of the family sold their estates, Bartley Watermill was purchased by the Ashby family and it was the heirs of Thomas Ashby who sold the property in 1806 to the Bayham Estate.Bartley MillEeles' Frant
