Nutley Windmill in 1936
This very charming windmill is situated in the midst of most lovely scenery, the moor-like Ashdown Forest, covered with heather and bracken, with most beautiful undulations, surrounding it on all sides and at many points affording a wonderful panorama of the surrounding countryside. It lies behind Nutley village, off the road which later forks at Friars Gate and leads to Groombridge and Crowborough respectively; and it is approached by a lane which turns off to the left just after leaving Nutley. Altogether one of the prettiest windmills in the county.

Historical records

17th centuryHistoryNutley WindmillHemming's Windmills
This little mill is one of the oldest in Sussex. It is impossible to fix its date with any certainty, but some think it may go back as far as the end of the seventeenth century. However old it may be, it is the only post mill in Sussex that has been an open-trestle mill throughout its career, never having had a round-house. It has recently been done up and given a dressing of creosote, so that now it is no longer a black, but a brown mill. It is a singularly dainty structure, and, I should think, quite the smallest in the county.
