Hadlow Down
HADLOW DOWN is a hamlet, 4 miles south west from Mayfield and 2 miles east from Buxted, and is an ecclesiastical parish, formed in 1837 from the parish of Buxted and Mayfield: it is in the Eastern division of the county, Tunbridge Wells county court district., rural deanery of Pevensey third division, Lewes archdeaconry and Chichester diocese. The church of St. Mark, consecrated in 1836, consists of a small chancel, nave, and a tower with a short spire, containing 1 bell. The register dates from the year 1836. The living is a vicarage, gross yearly value £150, with residence and 7 acres of glebe, in the gift of the rector of Buxted and vicar of Mayfield alternately, and held since 1871 by the Rev. George Leopold Longland, of St. Bees. Here is a chapel for Calvinistic Baptists. The Marquess of Abergavenny is the landowner. The soil is principally light subsoil, gravel. The chief crops are hops, wheat and oats. The population in 1881 was 1,044.

Thomas Kitchin, an engraver and publisher from c.1738 to 1776, held the appointment of Hydrographer to the King. His output was prolific. He engraved the maps of the British and French dominions in North America by John Mitchell (1755), which was used at the peace coucil at the end of the revolutionary war. In his later years he worked with his son (hence senior after his name in the c.1755 edition of the Small English Atlas). He died in 1784.
