WILLIAM COLE of Edenbridge, butcher (1578-1647).

He was baptised on 23rd March 1578, the second son of Andrew Cole and Joane Basset. He was therefore aged 6 when his father died in 1584, leaving him to be brought up by his mother and her second husband John Wells, butcher. They must have seen to it that he had an education because he was literate. By his father's will he was to receive all his father's tenements called Snowerhill in the market place of Edenbridge. It is not known how this squares with the ownership of Snowerhill in 1635 by Anna Holmden. William married Martha and his first son John was born in 1602.

From 1612 to 1614 William Cole was one of the two wardens of the Great Stone Bridge in Edenbridge, a trust which still exists. There is a signature of William Cole dating from 1612. In 1613 William Cole sold a messuage in Edenbridge to George Sone (This could be TA 509). In 1596 William Goyles witnessed a mortgage by John Soane. It is possible that Goyles is a variant of Cole, and in 1549 the will of Andrew Cole is actually written under the name Andrew Coyle. However Goyles could equally be Giles. If Goyles is Cole then several more facts would be known about William.

In 1638 William Cole appears to have borrowed £1 from the trustees of the Great Stone Bridge. In 1641 he was recorded in the Protestation Returns. William's wife Martha was buried in Edenbridge on 5th November 1641 and William in Edenbridge on 10th February, 1647, aged 69. They had at least four children, John, William, James and Elizabeth.
