ANDREW COLE of Limpsfield and Westerham (1580-1657).

The youngest son of Andrew Cole, baptised at Edenbridge on April 13th 1580, and aged 3 at his father's death. By his father's will he was to receive &6-13s-4d at the age of 23, in 1603.

In 1617 on June 15th he married Frances Brand at Limpsfield when he was aged 37. He had to hurry because the first child, Bryan, was baptised on June 18th at Limpsfield, just three days after the wedding. Other sons might be Jeremy, son of Andrew Cole of Stafford (Staffhurst) Wood, Limpsfield, baptised in 1620 and Thomas, son of Andrew Cole of ......, dwelling in Fawkenden Farm (Stockenden Farm), Limpsfield. A complication is that in 1593 it was presented that John Jewell had surrendered certain properties at Staffords Wood for the use of William Cole, son of Solomon Cole, but this must be from a different family. A son of Andrew Cole died at Westerham in 1627, and in 1629 his daughter Elizabeth was baptised at Westerham.

In 1624 Andrew Cole was listed in the manorial rolls of Westerham as a resident (Court Leet) but not as a tenant. He was fined 3d because he had received into his house as lodgers Thomas Browne and his two sons who had refused to come to church over a space of several months. [Were they objecting on religious grounds?] Between 1624 and 1642 Andrew is frequently listed as resident in Westerham Upland, but never attended court, either sending his excuses or being fined.

In 1627 Westerham parish paid Andrew Cole 6d for a week's houseroom for the goodwife Holmden. In 1643 Andrew and Bryan Cole were paid £6-10s for the upkeep of Joan Mills, their apprentice, who was bound to them by indenture. In 1634 Andrew witnessed the will of Anne Holden of Crowhurst, widow (see earlier).Andrew paid rrates in Westerham from 1625. From 1647 he paid rates together with his son Bryan, but from 1650 only Bryan paid rates. On January 3rd 1657 "Old" Andrew Cole was buried in Westerham , aged 77. His wife, who must have been at least ten years younger than him was buried in Westerham on July 26th 1669.
