Benjamin Slight was born in Scotland in 1800 to James and Hannah Slight. After his apprenticeship in Newcastle and early period in London he moved to Tunbridge Wells in 1830 as the Pastor at Mount Sion Chapel. After his marriage to Charlotte Twiss in 1836, Benjamin became the moving force that established the Congregational Church at Mount Pleasant in 1848. The Slights moved to East Grinstead in 1850 where Benjamin ministered at Ashurst Wood before deciding to extend the Congregational Ministry in East Grinstead through the establishment of the Moat Congregational Church in 1870.
