WILLIAM COLE of Edenbridge, linen weaver (1686-1762).
William Cole was baptised on March 3rd 1687 at Edenbridge, the only surviving son of Robert Cole, linen weaver and his wife Elizabeth Seares. On June 12th 1709 at Edenbridge he married Hannah Wallis, possibly the daughter of Thomas Wallis, licensed victualler. In 1709 he was mentioned as a freeholder of Kings Borough, together with his uncle, William Cole, senior. When William Cole, senior, of Chiddingstone, died in 1716 he left 20s to his nephew, described in the will as a linen weaver. Robert Cole also died in that year and William must have succeeded to his property because in that year he is recorded as the tenant of Bellmans, together with Thomas Budgin of Skinners.
William Cole is mentioned in the Poll Books of 1731 and 1734 as living in Edenbridge with his freehold in Hever (which is probably incorrect). In the Assessments for the repairing of bridges in Kings Borough 1725 and 1731 he appears as the subtenant of Thomas Budgen of Skinners, with a holding of 20 acres. He continued to be listed as a freeholder of Kings Borough until 1746 and in 1743 he was returned as a freeholder worth £10. He is not mentioned in the Edenbridge churchwardens' or surveyors' accounts, but in 1735 Hever parish paid William Cole 14s 3d for nine yards of woollie for the burial of Susan Emery, and in 1737 they paid £1-10s to William Cole for John Dentory's rent.
In 1761 William Cole and his son James, also a weaver, were bound over because of the misdeeds of grandson William. "Whereas Mary Jessop of Chiddingstone, singlewoman, was lately gotten with child by William Cole as appeareth by the examination on oath of the said Mary Jessop taken before Thomas Curtes esq one of his Majesty's Justices of the Peace for Kent and she the said Mary Jessop being as yet undelivered is likely to become chargeable to the said parish of Chiddingstone, William Cole, husbandman, and James Cole, weaver and father of William Cole, all of Edenbridge are bound in the sum of £50 to indemnify the parish of Chiddingstone for the expense of bringing up the child over the next 21 years".
Williamn Cole was buried on February 24th 1762 at Edenbridge. His wife Hannah was buried on January 30th 1761. His tenancy of Bellmans Farm was not passed on to his children.
