THOMAS COLE, farmer/labourer, of Chiddingstone (1757-1835)
Thomas Cole was born on 9th August 1757and baptised in Chiddingstone, the son of William and Ann Cole of Chiddingstone. When his father died in 1795 Little Hilders was left to John, William and Edward, but not to Thomas.
From 1807 to 1815 Thomas and his brother Richard were the tenants of Great Hilders (Salmons) in succession to their mother; presumably they had worked there when she was the tenant. In February 1813 Chiddingstone overseers relieved Thomas with £1 so that he was presumably struggling financially. In 1815 Thomas and Richard gave up Salmons, which went to John Hoadley, and took Little Hilders which became vacant on the death of their brother John. They were still unable to pay their rates and in 1818 Thomas gave up Little Hilders to his brother Richard. From May 1816 Thomas Cole received regular relief, and was paid to work on the roads. In 1832 and 1835 he appears to have been living at Bowbeech. In 1832 he was given a jersey by charity, and again in 1833. He died in 1835 from dropsy, aged 77, and was buried on June 5th, at Chiddingstone. He never married.
