1581HistoryHogge HouseBuxted The Beautiful
On the north side of Hogge House is a cast from plaque with a hog in relief upon it and the date, 1581, underneath. This is a rebus on the name of the great iron founder who built the house and no doubt lived in it till his death in 1585.

1588HistoryHogge HouseBuxted The Beautiful
Three years afterwards [1588] the house [Hogge House] was sold by “Thomas Hog of Buxstedd to James Burgess” and the deed of conveyance (dated 30th Elizabeth) bears this endorsement:“In this house lived ralp Hog who at the then furnace at Buxted cast the first cannon that was cast in England.”
