| On the north side of Hogge House is a cast from plaque with a hog in relief upon it and the date, 1581, underneath. This is a rebus on the name of the great iron founder who built the house and no doubt lived in it till his death in 1585. | |||||

| Three years afterwards [1588] the house [Hogge House] was sold by “Thomas Hog of Buxstedd to James Burgess” and the deed of conveyance (dated 30th Elizabeth) bears this endorsement:“In this house lived ralp Hog who at the then furnace at Buxted cast the first cannon that was cast in England.” | |||||
